How we choose a fitting

Every luminaire has a shape. This is how you read it.

A polar intensity distribution is the first thing a lighting designer looks at and the last thing anyone else ever sees. Move the controls: the curve is computed from the values you set, and the cards below are lit by whatever you specify.

Beam angle
The cone within which intensity stays above half of its peak. It is what you aim; it is not what the eye sees at the edge.
Field angle
The wider cone down to a tenth of peak. This is where the spill lands, which is why it decides whether a neighbour complains.
Correlated colour temperature
Describes the source in isolation and almost nothing about how a surface will read once the light lands on it. Always test on the real material.
