Port Aroha Opera House

The building is cream-painted plaster with heavy modelling in the cornice and pediment, and the first instinct of every previous scheme had been to flood it flat from the square. Flat light kills plaster. We lit it instead from three positions at a grazing incidence of about fifteen degrees, which lets the cornice cast its own shadow and gives the pediment sculpture back its depth, then filled the loggia behind the columns at a lower level so the colonnade reads as a row of solids against a lit void.

Colour took two site visits to settle. On paper the plaster wanted 3000K, but at 3000K the cream went distinctly sallow and the building looked tired. We ran a side-by-side mock-up on the north bay and 2700K at CRI 90 with R9 held above 60 brought the pigment back without warming it into orange. The difference was obvious on site to everyone standing in the square and completely invisible in the renderings we had produced two months earlier.

Sixty metres from open water, corrosion sets the schedule. Everything mounted externally is 316 stainless or marine-grade anodised aluminium at IP66, with isolating washers at every dissimilar-metal junction and no painted steel anywhere in the assembly. Event colour is possible but deliberately limited: the trust can call six approved states from a wall panel, and the underlying architectural scheme never switches off beneath them, so the building is never reduced to a coloured billboard.
