Selected schemes
Facades, bridges, museums, concert halls and public space. Every scheme below was surveyed after dark, mocked up at full scale on the real material, and aimed by hand at commissioning.
Naerbro Crossing
A relighting of a 1930s steel lift bridge that had to read as one continuous structure from the water while putting no light at all into the navigation channel.
Vandrup, Denmark 2021
Saint Helin Cathedral
A listed limestone cathedral relit inside and out, with an exterior scheme designed to survive four months a year of snow cover and a doubled ground reflectance.
Saint Helin, Quebec, Canada 2019
Rondekloof Collection Galleries
Nine galleries of textiles, works on paper and lacquer, lit to a hard annual exposure budget rather than a fixed illuminance.
Rondekloof, South Africa 2023
Alcira Philharmonic Hall
A 1,480-seat shoebox hall relit for broadcast without losing the slow, silent house fade the orchestra had built its opening ritual around.
Nueva Alcira, Argentina 2018
Shirvanabad Old Town Courtyards
A masterplan for a walled quarter of sandstone courtyards where the brief was to raise perceived safety while lowering measured light levels.
Shirvanabad, Azerbaijan 2022
Kasumi Tower Lobby and Facade
A glass block facade lit from within, where the entire design problem was making 4,600 blocks glow evenly and then persuading them to switch off at midnight.
Nishikura, Japan 2024
Port Aroha Opera House
An Edwardian theatre standing sixty metres from open water, floodlit from across the square in a specification driven as much by salt corrosion as by composition.
Port Aroha, New Zealand 2016
Meerhaven Canal Ring
Four kilometres of canal quay relit around a protected bat commuting route, where the design instrument was the water surface rather than the fittings.
Meerhaven, Netherlands 2025
